A mindset is the established set of attitudes we have. There are two types: fixed mindset and growth mindset.

Those with a fixed mindset are likely to:

  1. not deal very well with setbacks

  2. try to hide their mistakes

  3. blames everything on everyone else takes no responsibility

  4. believe that their abilities are limited to one area

  5. engage in negative self-talk by saying things like, ‘I can’t do it’

  6. avoid challenges

Those with a growth mindset are likely to:

  1. welcome challenges and new things

  2. learn from the people around them

  3. understand that in order to get what they want, they have got to work hard

  4. recognise failure as an opportunity to learn

  5. acknowledge their own weaknesses, and focus on improving them

  6. value their talents, their life and grateful

Which category would you put yourself in at this moment?

If it’s fixed, here’s how to transform to a growth mindset because it’s important to be open to learn new things in life, to embrace challenges and to treat setbacks as learning experiences.

  1. I can’t do it … yet. The way we talk to ourselves impacts what we actually achieve. If you tell yourself that you can do something, chances are that you will, even if you don’t accomplish it straightaway.

  1. Get rid of the perfectionism . Don’t let the idea of perfection get in the way of getting things done. Remember: perfection is an made up! What matters most is your effort and your attitude!

  1. Be open to new ways of doing things. You can never be sure of how something is going to pan out if you’ve never tried it before. Before assuming that something will never work, ask yourself: ‘What do I have to do to make this work?’.

  1. Don’t let setbacks and your struggles get you down. Setbacks don’t mean you’ve failed, just that you need to try a different approach and learn. Take feedback from the experience on board, and make changes. You can learn just as much from a mistake as you can from success.

Following the growth mindset, there are 7 mindsets that will dramatically improve your life, career and business.

  1. Self-trust mindset – it’s a learned skill to rely upon one’s inner resources (i.e. emotional, mental and physical).

  2. Goal-setting mindset – the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

  3. Patient mindset – the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.

  4. Courageous mindset – not deterred by danger or pain; brave.

  5. Focused mindset – the centre of interest or activity, the state or quality of having or producing clear visual definition.

  6. Positive mindset – constructive, optimistic, or confident.

  7. Learning mindset – the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience, or being taught.

Which ones are you doing?

Which ones will you take on board?

The last message I want to leave you with is controlling your mind and challenging your mindset.

An exercise I want you to try for this is:

Grab a journal or blank piece of paper.

Make two lists of beliefs about yourself, one about the positive beliefs and the other about the negatives.

Be open and honest so that you can become aware and change things.

Next, look at the positives and write down what led you to these beliefs (Who told you it? How did you become great at something?).

Then, from the negative list, pick out three that really hold you back in your life, career and business.

Ask yourself and write down:

Where did this negative belief come from?

Who gave you it?

How do you feel about the person that gave you this belief?

Are they right?

What is it costing you day-to-day?

What will it mean long term?

Will my life be different if I let go of this belief?

Take a moment to self-reflect on this.

Now put some new beliefs in place in order to challenge your mindset.

Next to the three negative beliefs, right down the opposite of the belief and find some evidence within you to support it.

Start to notice the transformation and growth within.

My new belief is, I am going to…

This will define your own mindset, you can choose how to talk to yourself, don’t get stuck in negatively talking to yourself.

Externally you may be doing great with mindset but internally it could be very negative.

Everyday we are given the chance to renew our minds when we wake in the morning.

So, challenge your mind, keep positive and know that there are always good things happening and things that you can change.
